I started trying to exercise my painting muscles today. I've been wanting to do a portrait of my grandfather for a while now and I began yesterday by doing a layout sketch.
Today I began coloring it in and messing around with the colors. So, I guess you would call this the underpainting. the next step after this is to refine the picture into a finished product.

I'm enjoying this color foray quite a bit. The blocked in values are super interesting. I'd almost like to see it stay that way than progress further. But this is probably due to the nature of webby photo vs real life. I may have a different opinion if were in front of it in your living room.
