Thank you's and hoping for the best.

I just want to take a moment and say thank you to everyone who checked out the site, sent me an email, or actually posted a comment. The kind of support y'all showed was awesome and really inspires me to do more. I decided to post early this morning because the rest of my day will be spent worrying and hoping that my Steelers do well in tonight's big game! I already have a big knot in my stomach.

On to the post... this is a self-portrait I did two weeks ago. It's a quick sketch done in oil pastels. I really don't know how to use oil pastels but for a paint sketch I think it came out well. I recommend to any artists out there to try and do this on a regular basis. I am going to try and do more on a regular schedule so I can assess my progress. Venetian glassblowers often do regular self-assessments by creating a Roman Bottle. The vessel incorporates all of the basic techniques needed to be a master glassblower. So, if you can consistently make beautiful Roman Bottles, you're well on your way to taking over and becoming the maestro. I don't think I'll be taking over anytime soon, but I think I will try to do these more to see how I'm coming along.

I'm finding this particular post a bit difficult. I feel that this self-portrait looks a bit like something I did in my undergrad years. I almost didn't post it up, but I have to let it go. It's only a sketch. You see, I am one who creates a lot of art in my sketchbooks and doesn't share it with the outside world. I like to keep my art to myself. That why this blog is good medicine for me. I am ripping of the band-aid of art self-consciousness.

I'll leave you with this watercolor I found on the inter-webs of Steeler great Jack Lambert. Let us hope the spirit of Jack and the rest of his Steel Curtain brothers are with us tonight as we try to win our 7th Super Bowl. Here We Go Steelers!

  1. My condolences! On the other hand ... that's a beautiful eye.

  2. Foley,

Keep up the good work and park any self-consciousness at the door. You only get better through practice and feedback.

My two cents about the piece: I like the shadow work on the left side of the face - it portrays a depth to it. The right side, however, doesn't have the same amount of 'completeness' or depth-through-washout.

    Keep it up.

  3. Are you beardy now?

Also, explain to me the origins of the word fiasco and what it has to do with glassblowing.

  4. Foley,
I got to give it to you...I knew you were a great artist when you created our vision of our wedding invitation into our actual version and not "cookie cutter" invites but I'm learning so much more about your abilities...and darling keep going! Faces in particular are so difficult to draw/sketch...let alone-your own...I am so pleased you are moving forward with your aspirations and goals : )

    Miss you guys!
